TN02000054_3-V11

Device and setup for quick diagnostic of automotive batteries

The outcome type of a functional sample (Gfunk category)  – number TN02000054//003-V11, of the project “Božek Vehicle Engineering National Competence Center (BOVENAC),” funded by TA CR.

The result is a functional measurement setup for quick diagnostic of automotive battery cells based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The setup consists of a novel impedance measurement device, auxiliary hardware, and control and evaluation software. The core of the solution is a patented measuring block using passive matching transformers and dual measurement branches, which enables accurate sensing of very small impedances in the milliohm range with a high signal-to-noise ratio and short measurement times. The device is controlled via a PC application developed in MATLAB, which manages measurement configuration, automated acquisition of EIS spectra, and subsequent processing, including fitting the measured data to an equivalent electrical circuit model of the lithium-ion cell. The setup has been experimentally verified on precision reference components and LiFeYPO₄ cells, demonstrating measurement repeatability comparable with commercial EIS instruments. The result is intended for rapid battery evaluation, production quality control, and sorting of cells for second-life applications in the automotive and energy sectors.

The technical report describing the setup is available here.
